Las Albirrojas Prepare for Rio de Janeiro

An intensive training regime has Las Albirrojas preparing for international competition. Twenty players are together in Asunción training hard for the opportunity of representing their country next month at the international competition in neighboring Brazil.

Rio de Janeiro will be the setting for a two-day event played over March 6-7 which serves to prepare Brazil for hosting Rugby Sevens at the Olympic Games. The tournament is to take place at the Estadio Deodoro, located near the Olympic village.

Las Albirrojas are preparing at the national rugby stadium, the Estadio Héroes de Curuapayty which is also the headquarters of the national governing body – the Unión de Rugby del Paraguay (URP).

The female athletes are training three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm. They are doing so under the direction of Head Coach Eduardo Acosta and trainers Pedro Manuel Ruiz and Nelson Baruja.

The twenty athletes have been selected from an initial group of seventy players from all clubs throughout Paraguay. The twenty-women roster is displayed below.
