Yacare will play in Super Rugby Americas (SRA) 2027. Confirmation that the Paraguayan side will remain in the South American is forthcoming. It ends speculation that the team would become defunct and thus not return for the 2027 season.
The continuation of Yacare in SRA means the South American league will retain the same eight teams for 2027 that competed in the 2026 season. Argentina had four teams which gave the regional giants 50% of participants in the tournament for the first time. Yacare remaining is a positive for all involved and it will further the push for additional teams over time.
Alarm bells were ringing this past April. Gustavo Borgognon, the president of the Unión de Rugby del Paraguay (URP), placed the continuation of Yacare in SRA in clear doubt. Borgognon pointed to the economic loss that the team was operating on and the lack of a relevant fan base.
The fears of a collapse have ended, however, with Borgognon confirming that the project will continue on course with the URP continuing to have a team in SRA.
The continuation of Yacare will come with alterations. ESPN Scrum report that Yacare will be moving more home matches in 2027. The Paraguayan team is looking to directly engage with more Argentine provinces. It goes beyond nordeste argentino (Argentine northeast),as in addition to Corrientes, Chaco, Formosa, and Misiones, a match may be relocated to Neuquén in west-central Argentina at the northern end of Patagonia.
There was one relocated fixture in SRA 2026. Yacare’s home match against Los Tarucas was played at the Estadio Aranduroga Rugby Club in Corrientes province.
