Vannes are 80 minutes away from successfully earning promotion from the Pro D2 back to the Top 14. The club completed a comprehensive home Semi Final victory over Oyonnax on Thursday. The outcome means Vannes will face the winner of the second Semi Final, between Colomiers and Provence in the Pro D2 Final.
Francisco Gorrissen played a leading role in the victory over Oyonnax. The former Puma captained Vannes to the 48-7 triumph. He was a try scorer as he went over from a pick-and-go for a second-half try. The 72nd minute score was Vannes’ 5th and final try of the night. All five of Vannes’ tries came after Oyonnax scored the opening try of the Semi Final.
In addition to Gorrissen, two other Pumas started in the Pro D2 Semi Final. Props Santiago Medrano and Mayco Vivas were in a direct head-to-head battle with Medrano playing tight head for Vannes and Vivas playing loose head for Oyonnax.
The second Semi Final, between Colomiers and Province, will also feature Argentines. Patagonian Federico Wegrzyn will start at loose head for Provence who, like in the barrage, will be captained by Colombian Andrés Zafra. Meanwhile, Provence enter with Pablo Dimcheff starting at hooker. The Argentine plays for Italy.
Province finished the regular season in 3rd position behind Colomiers in 2nd and Vannes in 1st. The winner of the Pro D2 Final automatically earns promotion to the Top 14. The Pro D2 Runner-up (the team that loses the Final) will face Perpignan (who finish this season 13th) in the Top 14 Access Match. The winner of the Access Match will the confirmed for the Top 14 next season.
