Selknam added the slap of Peñarol to their Super Rugby Americas (SRA) 2026 season. In winning 41-26 on Saturday, Selknam edged closer towards a place in the SRA play-offs. After 10 rounds of the regular season, Selknam are in 4th position on 32 points and are the only non-Argentine side in the Top 4. Los Tarucas are 5th on 24 points.
Selknam’s notable home win over the reigning SRA champions was a bonus point victory. It was a comprehensive performance that saw the Chileans converting a 28-19 half-time lead into a noteworthy victory.
Selknam and Peñarol both scored impressive tries in the first-half. It started with Lucas Bianchi scoring for Peñarol. The Uruguayan flanker finished off a break from Ignacio Facciolo down the left side.
The hosts hit-back with a lineout to maul try. Hooker Augusto Böhme came away with the five pointer. It was followed by a superb try with Rodrigo Fernández putting in a cross-kick for Nicolás Saab who passed off the deck to Matías Garafulic who scored in the right corner.
Peñarol responded with a lineout to maul try through their hooker. Joaquín Myszka’s try was quickly followed by a second to Böhme who again scored from a lineout to maul. It meant Selknam were three tries to two up at the end of opening quarter.
Peñarol’s third score saw Canadian Noah Riley Flesch benefitting from an up-and-under which Selknam failed to cleanly win. The search for points saw Selknam hitting-back through center Domingo Saavedra. Lucas Berti had an assist play in the try.
The second-half did not include the same level of enterprising play as the first. Matías Garafulic landed two penalties, one early in the half and one late. Lucas Berti darted over for a stereotypical try for a scrum-half from a scrum late in the third quarter.
Peñarol also scored one second-half try. It was sufficient to, like Selknam, earn a bonus point for scoring four tries in the match. The try saw Santiago Marolda catching Selknam sleeping as he scored from a quick-tap penalty.
Selknam play at home again in Week 11. They do so against competition leaders, Los Dogos. Peñarol continue on the road. They make the trip to São Paulo to face Os Cobras.
