Benetton sign uncapped prop from Argentina

United Rugby Championship (URC) Benetton have announced the recruitment of an uncapped prop from Argentina. The Italian club will be the first foreign experience for Matías Medrano. The loose-head prop from Buenos Aires replaces Thomas Gallo who is joining Lyon in the Top 14 from next season.

Medrano will make the move from Super Rugby Americas (SRA) to the URC in a mid-year move. His contract with Benetton is a two-year-deal from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2028.

A native of Argentina, Matías Medrano was born on December 19, 2003. He is a 185 cm tall and weights 117 kg. He plays loose-head prop while his brother plays tight-head. His brother is Santiago Medrano who has 31 caps for Los Pumas and played at Rugby World Cup 2019.

Santiago Medrano is a former Los Jaguares player in Super Rugby. He plays his rugby for Vannes in the Pro D2. The brothers are products of Club Regatas Bella Vista, a club that has produced many Pumas including Santiago Cordero who is a current teammate of Matías Medrano at Los Pampas in SRA.

Matías Medrano entered Argentina’s High Performance System (PLADAR) in 2023. He went through the system to play for Los Pumitas (Argentina u20’s) and Los Pampas in SRA. From there he earned selection for Argentina’s next-of-XV, the Argentina XV and was involved in the November 2025 tour.
