South Africa, New Zealand claim titles at New York 7s

The first ever New York stop on the World Sevens Series saw two closely contested Cup Finals on Sunday. In the first, South Africa clinched top spot for the men heading into the championship with a 10-7 victory over their closest rival Fiji. On the women’s side, New Zealand edged Australia 22-21 to strengthen their claim as strong favorites to claim glory in Bordeaux.

It was the third straight tourney win for the Blitzboks, who also claimed victory at Cape Town to make it four wins out of six events. Los Pumas were good enough for Bronze after cruising past Argentina. Despite the return to the podium Argentina finish the regular circuit in 6th spot, four points behind France.

New Zealand finish the women’s circuit in near unbeatable form, having won all but the Cape Town event when they came up short against Australia. The USA closed out their regular season account with a second straight Bronze, defeating Fiji to take hardware at home. Canada slid to a disappointing 7th, their lowest finish of the season.

Despite its branding the tournament was played at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. The series now moves into the Championship Rounds that begin at Hong Kong in a month’s time.
