Italy wrote history on Saturday by defeating England for the first time. The 23-18 victory in Rome was masterminded by former Puma, Gonzalo Quesada. The Argentine put together an offensive and defensive game plan that worked to the strengths of his side and with it England are in crisis with Steve Borthwick facing a probable exit.
The FIR described it as Italy making history. The match report noted that a packed and enthralling Olimpico stadium saw Quesada’s team break the last remaining taboo in the Six Nations. In beating England for the first-time, Italy now officially have victories over all rivals in the annual European Tier 1 Championship.
The win was Quesada’s second victory of the 2026 Six Nations. It follows a win over Scotland earlier in the tournament. Italy fell to defeats against France and Ireland and will face Wales in their final fixture. The match against Wales will be away in Cardiff.
Quesada’s Italy defeated Wales in both the 2024 and 2025 Six Nations. Since taking over as Head Coach of Italy in January, 2024, the Quesada-coached Azzurri have wins over Australia, England, Japan, Scotland, and Wales. Tier 2 victories have come against Chile, Georgia, Namibia and Tonga.
The 2026 Six Nations match between Italy and England was the thirty-third test match between the teams. The result ended England’s winning-streak of which lasted from October 08, 1991 to March 07, 2026.
