Santiago Pernas Magic Sinks Capibaras

A magical play from Santiago Pernas saw Los Pampas sinking Los Capibaras in Buenos Aires on Friday. Pernas scored a sensational second-half try to see Los Pampas home to a 25-20 victory. In beating Los Capibaras, Los Pampas handed the team from El Litoral their first defeat in Super Rugby Americas (SRA).

Played at La Catedral, Los Pampas overcame an 8-7 half-time deficit to sneak in a late victory. It all started well, though, as Ignacio Bottazzini scored from a lineout to maul for Los Pampas in the opening minutes of play. Bautista Farsé converted for the only other score of the first-half for the home side.

Both teams defended well and minimized opposition chances. Los Capibaras opened their scoring through a Ignacio Dogliani penalty late in the first quarter. The same player scored the other points of the half as he finished off a break involving Alejo Sugasti, and Guido Chesini.

Dogliani added four second-half penalties to score all second-half points for Los Capibaras. The points were enough to have the team leading late in the contest, but the visitors were overtaken with Bautista Farisé landing two late penalties.

The 74th and 79th minute strikes from Farisé gave Los Pampas victory but the decisive difference was the two second-half tries, both of which were scored by Pumas wingers.

The first was scored by retired Puma, Santiago Cordero. His 51st minute score came with an assist pass from captain Lucas Marguery. The second, scored by Santiago Pernas, was magic. Pernas chased a high-ball and caught it inches from the sideline, out-jumping Dogliani. He then sprinted to the try zone to score.

Next up for Los Pampas is a trip to Tucumán to face Los Tarucas. Los Capibaras, who claimed a losing bonus point, travel to Asunción to face Yacare in week four of SRA 2026.
