Peñarol Unveil New Captain for Super Rugby Americas 2026

Reigning Super Rugby Americas (SRA) champions, Peñarol have unveiled a new captain for the SRA 2026 season. Second-rower Felipe Aliaga is the new leader. The 26-year-old has plenty of SRA experience to his name and has 22 test caps for Uruguay.

Aliaga was noted for his leadership abilities during the Rugby World Cup 2027 Qualifiers. He was handed the captaincy for the home match against Paraguay in Montevideo. Aliaga captained Uruguay to a 78-10 victory that day.

For SRA 2026,, Aliaga will have two players as his understudies. Flanker Lucas Bianchi and center Juan Manuel Alonso have been named as Peñarol vice-captains. Both Bianchi and Alonso also played in the aforementioned match for Uruguay against Paraguay in 2025.

The trio of Aliaga, Bianchi and Alonso all played for Los Teros at Rugby World Cup 2023. Aliaga and Alonso both featured in the victory over Namibia in Lyon. The trio of Aliaga, Alonso and Bianchi all played for Uruguay in their most recent test match, an away victory over Romania in Bucharest in November 2025.
