Five Classic Pumas Tries against Australia

Argentina and Australia are regular opponents in the Rugby Championship. Indeed, test matches between the teams has boomed due to the competition. There were no matches between Los Pumas and the Wallabies in the 1990s and four in the 2000s but there have already been 11 played in the 2020s.

The regular annual competition means that ARN readers may not recall many of the five classic Pumas tries on this list. The tries listed were scored in test matches played between 1983 and 2018.

The first and second tries were scored in Brisbane in 1983. It was the first time the teams played in Australia and Los Pumas came away with an 18-3 victory. N8 Tomás Peterson opened the scoring. It was a push-over try against the head. Buenaventura Mínguez also scored from a scrum. This time it was an Argentine feed.

The third try was scored by Cristian Mendy in 1987. The father of Ignacio Mendy, sealed victory for Los Pumas over Australia in Buenos Aires. The crowd was electric as Mendy stepped off his left foot to run around to seal victory.

The fourth try was scored in the 2018 Rugby Championship. Bautista Delguy finished off a long-range score for Los Pumas at Gold Coast. It started with a lineout inside the 22. Pablo Matera broke the line and combined with Marcos Kremer. A wide ball the bounced off the deck for Delguy to gather and slice inside to score.

The fifth try on the list was also scored in 2018 but this time it was a home test match for Los Pumas in Salta. The try was scored by replacement Santiago González Iglesias. It came two phases after a scrum with González Iglesias breaking a tackle and stepping around a defender to score from long-range.
