Selknam Stay Alive With Gutsy Upset Win over Pampas

Selknam went to Buenos Aires are got the job done on Monday evening. The Chileans were 18-16 winners at La Catedral. The result means Los Pampas have not yet qualified for the Semi Finals; an Argentine win would have seen them secured of a spot. Instead, Selknam’s gutsy upset win sees them staying alive and still in with a chance of reaching the play-off’s.

 

MATCH NOTES
  • A late change saw Nicolás D’Amorim forced out and replaced by Juan Cruz Pérez Rachel. Francisco Lusarreta was added inn place of Pérez Rachel as a replacement.
  • Both teams had forwards yellow carded in the first quarter.
  • Tomás Salas opened the scoring with a penalty on 6 minutes. Renthel Estanislao missed one on 18 minutes but landed another penalty on 22 minutes.
  • Salvador Lues scored the only try of the first-half. Salas converted and added a penalty for a 13-3 lead.
  • Winger Jeronimo Ulloa scored for Los Pampas on 48 minutes. Estanislao missed the conversion.
  • Replacement Norman Aguayo scored to give Selknam a 10-point lead. Salas’ conversion missed.
  • Ignacio Bottazzini scored for Los Pampas with the match winding down. Estanislao’s conversion was off target which meant the teams were separated by 2 points.
  • Los Pampas have now lost back-to-back matches. They fell 32-26 to Yacare in Asunción.
  • Selknam rebounded from a 41-21 defeat against Los Tarucas in Tucumán.
  • Selknam won without captain Martín Sigren and fellow first-choice players Domingo Saavedra and Marcelo Torrealba.
