Chile fall to Portugal in World Rugby Nations Cup

Los Cóndores of Chile were beaten by Os Lobos of Portugal in a World Rugby Nations Cup match on Saturday. The final score of 36-15 does not tell the tale of the match. It was a tight opening half with the Portuguese holding a 17-15 half-time lead. It was won by Portugal scoring three second-half tries, two of which came late.

The match had seven tries in total with Chile being outscored by five tries to two. Los Cóndores scored first with fullback Matías Garafulic over on 5 minutes. He failed to convert his own try.

Portugal scored in response. The opening Lobos try came with a South American connection. Former Peñarol winger Manuel Cardoso Pinto chased through a kick from scrum-half Samuel Marques to score.

Fifteen minutes without points followed before Los Cóndores ran in their second try. It came with a move down the left side with Rodrigo Fernández making a break from fly half. He was stopped a meter short of the try zone. Quick recycling enabled Raimundo Martínez to go low and score. Garafulic converted for a 12-7 lead.

Portugal ended the half strongly. First, Marques slotted a penalty on 30 minutes which also saw Garafulic yellow carded. Then, two minutes before Garafulic returned, David Wallis broke a tackle from Manuel Bustamante to score.

Garafulic returned to land a penalty to cut the deficit to two points at half-time. Unfortunately, for Los Cóndores it was the last time the team would score in the match.

The second-half took a long time for points to arrive. The first came on 57 minutes with Raffaele Storti scoring against the run of play for Portugal. It was good vision from the winger while the next try was a favorable bounce for André da Cunha.

The match ended with Chile looking to run the ball out from deep. A low pass from Bustamante to Garafulic saw the fullback fumbling and Storti accepted the gift try to complete his double.

The victorious Portuguese now turn their attention to Samoa. The contest will again be a home game for the Europeans and will take place next Saturday. Chile will also be in action again but this time they take on Spain in Madrid. The Spanish enter on the back of a nail bitting win over Uruguay earlier today.
