The quest to bring the Rugby World Cup to Argentina in 2035 has been consolidated. The Unión Argentina de Rugby (UAR) is moving forward with the bid for Argentina to host a first-ever Rugby World Cup.
The upcoming steps in the bid sees the UAR hosting World Rugby CEO, Alan Gilpin. His visit comes with the official intention of analyzing Argentina’s feasibility to be the host country of rugby’s most significant event.
The project is led by the UAR and includes neighbors as Argentina seeks to host a Rugby World Cup with Chile, Uruguay and Brazil included to potentially have sub-host status. It has been structured this way to reflect the development of Sudamérica Rugby.
UAR President Gabriel Travaglini will run the meetings with Gilpin. Additional people present will include Félix Páez Molina, Vice President of the UAR; Agustín Pichot, member of the World Rugby Council and the SANZAAR Executive Committee; and Sol Iglesias, General Manager of the UAR.
UAR President Gabriel Travaglini commented:
“The 2035 bid represents a federal objective and a legacy project that transcends our borders. Welcoming Alan Gilpin to advance this technical analysis is a fundamental step forward in demonstrating that the region is ready. We want a World Cup that reflects the passion and development that rugby has achieved in every corner of our territory.”
Argentina is the only Men’s Semi Finalist in Rugby World Cup history to never have hosted a Rugby World Cup. Los Pumas have competed at every Men’s Rugby World Cup, with the best finish being third in 2007. It was one of two World Cups hosted by France in the 21st Century. France also hosted matches during the 1991 and 1999 World Cups.
