South American Teams Prepare for Montevideo

South American teams are preparing for action in Montevideo. The 2017 edition of the Valentín Martínez 7’s will take place on November 10-11 at Carrasco Polo Club in the Uruguayan capital.

Competing will be seven countries. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay all do so from South America while there is a spot for one more which sees Costa Rica included. All countries will face each other in the upcoming event.

The Valentín Martínez is the top level annual competition for women’s rugby on the Sudamérica Rugby calendar.  This year’s tournament is more important than others. On the line is a spot in the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

Since the tournament began in 2004 Brazil has dominated. So impressive have the Brazilian women been that they have won every edition of the tournament that they have played in. The one non-appearance was in 2015 when the tournament was used as a qualifying event for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. That year Colombia was champion and earned the right to compete at Rio 2016.

Also up for grabs in Montevideo are places on the Women’s Sevens circuit. The two top performers are to qualify for the Hong Kong Sevens while the winner will seal their place at the Langford Sevens in Victoria, Canadá.
