Canada names Women’s West camp attendees

Canada’s next stage of the selection process leading to the Women’s Rugby Super Series in June takes place at Shawnigan Lake School from March 16-20. Head Coach François Ratier will switch his attention from the Americas Rugby Championship to preside over 33 players named to participate in the first of two regional camps.

Nine members of Canada’s 2014 World Cup finalist team are included – props Hilary Leith and Laura Russell, locks Tyson Beukeboom and Maria Samson, flanker Barb Mervin, centres Andrea Burk and Amanda Thornborough, wing Brittany Waters, and fullback Julianne Zussman. Only one player – recalled prop Brandi van Eeuwen – was not included in the list of 79 named in January’s long list.

The Super Series kicks off on July 1st when Canada will play hosts USA, followed by matches against England and France. Canada’s East selection camp will be held from April 19-23 at the University of Guelph. Finally a senior camp in September will lead into a three-match tour to Europe in November as preparations for the 2017 World Cup in Ireland.
