Ecuador is to meet Guatemala in South American B Repechage in June, it was confirmed by the Asocatión Deportiva Nacional de Rugby de Guatemala (Guatemalan Rugby Association).
The one-off fixture will see the winner of the 2015 South American C Championship, Guatemala, playing away against the bottom placed side from the South American B Championship, Ecuador. The fixture will take place in Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil on Saturday June 11.
Ecuador was winless in the 2015 South American B Championship. Losses by scorelines of 77-13 against Colombia, 30-0 against Peru and 42-11 against Venezuela last November confirmed that Los Piqueros would need to win a play-off to retain their place in South American B.
Los Piqueros’ opponents were confirmed as being Guatemala after Los Jaguares were undefeated in the South American C Championship in December. Guatemala upset Costa Rica 19-17 in the opening round and was far too strong for Panama in round two, winning 73-12. A final round 26-8 win against the home side, El Salvador confirmed Guatemala as South American C Champions.
