Guatemala Upset Costa Rica in South American C Championship

The national men’s rugby team of Guatemala, Los Jaguares, completed the greatest ever win in their history today, defeating Central American rivals, Costa Rica.

In what was a shock result on the opening day of the 2015 South American C Championship, Guatemala overcame Costa Rica 19-17. The winners have enjoyed good results recently with wins over both El Salvador and Honduras but a win over Costa Rica is truly remarkable.

Costa Rica has been a full World Rugby member and has been playing test match rugby since 2005. Rugby was born in Guatemala in 2007 but is yet to become an affiliated member of World Rugby. The country is, like Costa Rica, a member of Sudamérica Rugby.

Guatemala was the better team today, converting a 16-10 half time lead into a victory. With the win Los Jaguares can aim for the South American C title and dream of rising to the South American B Championship.

The win today underlines rapid progress which has seen Guatemala catching up to Costa Rica who had been notably superior as recently as two years ago. In 2014 Costa Rica defeated Guatemala 22-17 while in 2013 the scoreline was 53-10. In 2012 Costa Rica won 37-10.
