Canada names Can-Am Cup longlist

New head coach Jennifer Boyd has named 59 players to take part in a final selection camp for Canada’s u20 women’s side ahead of the Can-Am Cup in August. The camp follows up the completion of the recent Eastern Canadian Championships in Belleisle and the Canadian u20 tourney in Regina. Boyd takes over the side after acting as assistant to Sandro Fiorino during last year’s successful series. Fiorino has moved up to assist with the women’s senior sevens side.

Included are several returning players, including captain DaLeaka Menin and fellow front rowers Tiffany Picketts and Emily Tuttosi. Second row Alex Ellis, flanker Katie Svoboda, and scrumhalf Jess Neilson were also part of last year’s team. Menin, Picketts, Neilson, and Julia Folk were all included in Francois Ratier’s senior women’s side during the Women’s Rugby Super Series in Alberta earlier this month.

A total of 18 players from the squad hail from Ontario, with Alberta contributing nine; Quebec and British Columbia seven each; Nova Scotia six; Saskatchewan five; Prince Edward Island three; and two from both New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Canada will play against the USA twice, on August 19 and 22, at Central Washington University.
