Colombia goes for Gold at Pan American Games

Colombia’s national women’s Rugby Sevens team Las Tucanes have arrived in Toronto in search of returning home with medals from the upcoming Pan American Games. Rugby Sevens is to be involved for just the second time in the games’ history after having featured four years ago in Guadalajara, Mexico. Unlike in 2011, however, this year represents the debut of women’s Sevens.

Competing in Toronto are to be six teams. Colombia qualified at the 2015 Mar del Plata Sevens as did Argentina. They are being joined by Brazil, Mexico, the USA and hosts Canada with three of them winning medals and Colombia is seeking to be one of them.

The Colombians  impressed recently by defeating all opponents en route to winning the CONSUR Sevens in Santa Fé and, in doing so, qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games. With wins against strong South American opposition Colombia confirmed itself as one of the teams to watch out for in Toronto.

The means in which Colombia qualified for the Olympic Games provides support to there being a number of genuine medals contenders in Toronto. Indeed the Colombians are aiming high with a Gold Medal being faith from the squad believing that it is within their means.

In order to do so similar performances from Santa Fé will be required and the opposition is to be tougher. Regardless of the result the progress demonstrated by Las Tucanes has been highly noteworthy and rugby has a very bright future in South America’s second most populated country.
