MacGinty’s Sharks shut down Bears at Ashton Gate

AJ MacGinty was at it again on Friday evening. The US Eagles flyhalf led Sale Sharks to a 20-13 road win over the table-topping Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate. It moves Sale to within three points of Bristol with eight games played, though Exeter can push slightly ahead if they beat Newcastle on Sunday.

It was more than just MacGinty’s right boot that sparked Sale. With the game in the balance he fired a flat pass under pressure to put Luke James into the corner in the 75th minute. MacGinty then landed his 5th penalty in the 80th minute to seal the victory and give him 15 points for the day.

The Bristol Bears also had an Americas RWC representative. Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro made his English Premiership debut. The veteran loose head was a replacement. He joined Bristol following the 2020 Tri Nations.

With 98 points on the season MacGinty is currently second in the Premiership, trailing Harlequins flyhalf Marcus Smith by only four points. The two look set to battle it out for the scoring title with Rhys Priestland and Paddy Jackson both more than 40 points behind in a third-place tie.
