Rob Howley to join Canada coaching staff

Rob Howley is to join Canada’s coaching staff. The Welshman has a highly respected rugby intellect. He has previous experience as the assistant coach to the Cardiff Blues, Wales, and the British & Irish Lions. He was capped 61 times as a player and played in Wales and England.

He was removed from Wales’ coaching team just before RWC 2019. He was send home from Japan on charges of breaching World Rugby’s anti-corruption regulations, specifically for betting on rugby matches.

Howley suffered tremendously from the incident; he was tipped to become Italy’s Head Coach after RWC 2019. Now, 12 months later he is to resume his coaching career. He is to do so after an 18 month suspension which was reduced to 9 months.

His new role will be in Canada. Howley will be senior assistant for the national men’s team. His position will be for a term of three years, thereby up until and including RWC 2023 in France. He is to also operate as a consultant for the Toronto Arrows.
