Drew Mitchell confirms New York move

Drew Mitchell will join Rugby United New York for the 2021 Major League Rugby season, but whether he actually plays remains to be seen. The former Wallabies winger announced that he will move stateside when conditions allow on The Lockdown with Jim Hamilton. RugbyPass first reported that Mitchell had signed for RUNY in January, but the team never confirmed the move and he did not make an appearance during the truncated 2020 season.

His exact role appears up in the air. Mitchell has not played since retiring in June 2017 and concedes that while his visa has been approved, he may not lace up the boots with his 37th birthday to arrive in March of next year. A job as a coach or other off-field position appears to be on the cards.

After a professional career that saw him win over a century of Super Rugby caps before spending four seasons with Toulon in France, Mitchell was more recently employed as a television pundit for Fox Sports. He was released from the job in January as the network moved to reduce its coverage of rugby union.

Mitchell won 71 caps for Australia between 2005 and 2016. He played in three World Cups, his 14 tries in 13 tournament games only one behind joint record-holders Jonah Lomu and Bryan Habana. With 34 test tries in all Mitchell sits 5th on the all-time list for Australia.
