SaberCats sign former Brumbies halfback De Wet Roos

The Houston SaberCats have signed scrumhalf De Wet Roos for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. Originally from South Africa, the 29-year-old moved to Australia in 2013 and has been a standout in the Shute Shield and National Rugby Championship. He was signed by the Brumbies in 2017 as an injury replacement for Tomás Cubelli and played 10 Super Rugby games.

Roos arrives from the Southern Districts club in Sydney where he has been the first choice No9 since joining at the end of a one-year deal with Narbonne in the French Pro D2. He has played for the Greater Sydney Rams, Sydney Rays, and NSW Country Eagles in the NRC. In 2015 Roos played two games for the Australian Barbarians.

It fills a void for the SaberCats following the departure of Connor Murphy, who has started 19 of Houston’s 24 total MLR games. Murphy has opted to step away from professional rugby at the age of just 24. Uruguay star Santiago Arata was also on the books last season but after his outstanding World Cup is expected to receive offers from European clubs.
