During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. First up as the feature Team of the Week is Uruguay.
In day two of the series the feature is a famous try scored by Pablo Lemoine. The try was against RWC 2003 winners England in a pool match in Brisbane, Australia.
The score came from a set-piece lineout. Having won the throw Los Teros mauled forward to within two meters of the English tryline. Two phases later the ball was passed to Lemoine who bulldozed his way over Danny Grewcock and also saw off a would be tackle from Joe Worsley.
The try was the second of RWC 2003 for Lemoine. He had earlier scored a try against Samoa in Western Australian city of Perth. Both tries were impressive though it is that against England which will long continue to appear on highlights features.
For Lemoine RWC 2003 was his second Rugby World Cup as a player. He started for Uruguay in all three of their matches in RWC 1999, doing so against Spain, Scotland, and South Africa. In RWC 2003 he would again start all matches for Los Teros this time playing against South Africa, Samoa, Georgia, and England.
In Uruguay’s next RWC appearance Lemoine would be the Head Coach. It was in RWC 2015 with Uruguay playing against Australia, England, Fiji, and Wales. The pool was so demanding that Uruguay had to face both England, and Wales at their respective home national rugby stadiums.
