Canada scores convincing win over England Academy

Canada ‘A’ scored a convincing 35-14 win over England Academy at Cobham RFC on Wednesday. Led by a dominant forward pack, the visitors outscored their hosts five tries to two with fullback Irene Patrinos a perfect five-from-five on conversions.

An early England assault was asbsorbed by Canada, who managed to hold the ball up in-goal, with their counter-strike finding more success. After clearing their lines they put sustained pressure on the England line and Brittany Kassil crashed over for the first score.

A stalemate then lasted more than 20 minutes before Canada grabbed a second. Gabrielle Senft had been a late replacement prior to kickoff for Cindy Nelles, and the No8 was gifted the easiest of tries on the back of a scrum pushover.

Desperate to get a score before halftime, England would have their prize thanks to a clear break and finish from second row Rosie Galligan. Ellie Green would convert her u20 teammate’s individual effort to make it a one-score game at the intermission.

Taylor Black enjoyed a fine match and her searing run through the line put Canada on the board quickest after the restart. England again wasted no time to fire back, however, with Elizabeth Crake punching over for a try converted by replacement Lizzie Goulden.

Again a lengthy scoreless period arrived until at the Canadian forwards again had their say, Olivia DeMerchant driving over the line to seal the result. Patrinos cut through to add the icing on the cake with Alysha Corrigan taking the pass in for the final score.

Next up for Canada is a test match against Wales on Saturday at Cardiff Arms Park.
