Paraguay romp past Guyana on Day Two of Americas Rugby Challenge

Paraguay romped past Guyana, winning 86-7 in day two of the Americas Rugby Challenge in Medellín, Colombia. Having defeated Mexico 45-36 on day one Paraguay can now prepare for the final fixture with an eye to a Grand Slam.

For Guyana the loss marked back-to-back heavy defeats. On day one the Green Machine fell to a 71-7 loss against Colombia. In that match the game was over before half time. Today, however, Guyana were beaten within the opening quarter.

Sebastian Urbieta opened the scoring, handing an early penalty for Paraguay. Rather than look to build a lead through further shots at goal, Paraguay did so through tries. Nine minutes into the match and Los Yákares were 15-0 ahead with Santiago Cabrera, and Leonardo Glizt both scoring. Urbieta landed one conversion.

The tries would not stop there. In the 14th Urbieta converted tries two tries as back-to-back scores were made by Renato Cardona, and Juan González. The 29-0 lead became 34-0 in the 18th minute with Héctor Gayoso adding to Paraguay’s romp past Guyana.

Camilo Orrego scored next for Paraguay, doing so in the 21st minute. Already out of the match Guyana would, nonetheless, strike back with Selwin Henry crossing the the Green Machine. Ryan Gonsalves’ conversion of Henry’s try would be the only score of the match for Guyana.

33 minutes in and Paraguay went 38-7 ahead. Scoring his second of the match was Cardona. Additional tries to César De Brix and González saw Paraguay past 50 points at up to 60-7 at half time.

In the second half Paraguay added three further tries to win by 86-7. In doing so the Paraguayans can finish no lower than second place in the Americas Rugby Challenge. Their final match will be against Colombia on Saturday while Guyana take on Mexico. Before then Colombia and Mexico face-off, doing so this afternoon.
