Colombia Shock Hosts to Qualify for Women’s Youth Olympic Games

Colombia shocked the hosts of both the qualifying tournament and the Youth Olympic Games. An outstanding two days of competition from Las Tucanes u18’s has seen the Colombians crowned champions and with it has come a place at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

Colombia’s memorable day in the Brazilian city of São José dos Campos will go down in history. Las Tucanes secured their place in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires with wins over Brazil and Chile. This followed on from a strong opening day on Friday.

Before Colombia played their first match of Day Two another would take place. Chile went into their game against Paraguay as favorites yet the day instead began with an upset. Paraguay impressed, running out 24-14 winners over Chile.

Brazil vs Colombia followed and it produced upset number two for the day. Las Tucanes overpowered the hosts in securing a 17-5 victory. The teams would go on to meet again in the tournament final.

Before the Brazil vs Colombia rematch there were an additional three matches to be played. The round-robin stage finished with Paraguay outclassing Argentina by an astounding 29-0. Colombia then completed the action with a crushing 39-0 win over Chile.

The results meant Chile was officially the bottom placed participant. Argentina and Paraguay would contest the Bronze Final with Brazil and Colombia battling for the spot in Buenos Aires 2018.

Argentina would redeem themselves to knock-over Paraguay 22-17 to finish third. Colombia then made history by downing Brazil 10-0 to book their spot in the 2018 Women’s Youth Olympic Games.
