Jaguares hammered by Lions

Los Jaguares were hammered by the Lions today, losing 47-27 in Johannesburg. Having lost last Saturday today’s result sees Los Jaguares returning home to Argentina with an 0-2 record and zero competition points to begin the season.

Despite losing by 20 points Los Jaguars actually held an early 10-0 lead. In the early goings Los Jaguars were also impressive on defense. It all came unstuck though as tries would rain against the South Americans.

The Lions fought back to hold a 19-10 lead and go on to win the match by seven tries to three.  The turning point was the first half yellow carding of winger Bautista Delguy. The one-man advantage saw the Lions hammering Los Jaguares and they would continue to control play through until the final stages of the match.

Los Jaguares’ 10-0 lead saw from an early converted try and a penalty. Scoring for the second time in as many matches was Emiliano Boffelli. The winger would also kick a long-range penalty, as was also the case against the Stormers.

The Lions opened their account in the 27th minute. They did so through enterprising play with Aphiwe Dyantyi rounding off an impressive team try for the hosts.

Following the try Delguy was yellow carded. The incident also saw local referee awarding the Lions a penalty try. With the penalty try the Lions claimed the lead.

With half time approaching the Lions scored their third try. Scoring was fullback Andries Coetzee who combined with outside center and fellow Springbok Lionel Mapoe.

The second half gave both teams the opportunity to regroup but Mario Ledesma’s side failed to do so. The Lions made quick work of extending their lead. From a scrum the Lions would score their fourth try with Sylvian Mahuza getting past a would-be tackle from Delguy.

Los Jaguares reduced the now seizable deficit through Nicolás Sánchez. The Tucumán fly half landed a 51st minute penalty with a straight-forward attempt. It was immediately responded to by the Lions with Dyantyi scoring for the second time. Twelve minutes later Rohan Janse van Rensburg crossed under the posts.

Los Jaguares crossed with a late try. Scoring was Delguy, bagging his second for the match. Yet it was the Lions who had the final say. Captain Warren Whiteley latched on to a pass from Elton Jantjies and got passed defenders to secure a twenty-point victory.
