Springboks Are Officially Without A Coach

The Springboks are officially without a coach. Argentina’s Rugby Championship rivals had their Head Coach fired this morning with immediate effect.

SA Rugby and Allister Coetzee had been involved in a dispute that was unable to be resolved. As such Coetzee was stood down, an unsurprising outcome given the performance of South Africa since he became Head Coach following Rugby World Cup 2015.

Under Coetzee South Africa lost all four matches against New Zealand. Three of them were between 38 and 57 points. South Africa also fell to a 38-3 defeat against Ireland. Additional losses included two away to Wales, one at home to Ireland and Argentina, and a first-ever defeat against Italy.

The change comes just before the new Super Rugby season gets underway. It enables a clean start to a new year and also time for two seasons of competition before Rugby World Cup 2019.

The new Head Coach is to be named later this month. South Africa’s first assignment under the new regime will be a three match home series against England in June.
