Gómez Kodela sees red against Pau

Joining Juan Imhoff and Nick Civetta on the naughty list heading into the New Year is Lyon prop Francisco Gómez Kodela. The 32-year-old tighthead specialist has enjoyed a fine season to date but a moment of madness against Pau will almost certainly cost him a few weeks on the sidelines.

With his team enjoying a healthy 23-10 lead heading into the break, Gómez Kodela spotted Pau flanker Steffon Armitage positioning himself to win a turnover at the breakdown. The Argentine blasted into Armitage in an attempt to clear him off the ball but did so with a shoulder charge to the head of the former England international.

Referee Tual Trainini immediately whistled play dead and referred the incident to the TMO. Upon review the officials decided there was no option but to send Gómez Kodela from the pitch. Now in his 7th year in France, it’s the first time he has been sent off and Lyon will be hoping the judiciary takes his good disciplinary record into account when deciding on the length of his suspension.
