Moroni faces four months out

The Jaguares will be without one of their key attacking players for a good chunk of the Super Rugby season. Matías Moroni underwent surgery this week to repair a long-standing shoulder injury he had been carrying. He is expected to be sidelined for the next four months, which would rule him out of at least the first 10 matches of the 2018 schedule.

Moroni’s injury may explain his indifferent form in 2017. An exciting attacking player, he has struggled to maintain his place in the Jaguares and Pumas teams with Matías Orlando the primary selection for both sides at Moroni’s preferred outside centre spot.

The 26-year-old has also been used on the wing, though his opportunities to start there in the new year appear limited with a long queue forming that now includes Emiliano Boffelli, Santiago Cordero, Ramiro Moyano, Manuel Montero, and newcomer Sebastián Cancelliere.

Orlando, being the incumbent, is now certain to assume the No 13 role for the Jaguares to start the season. The versatile and creative Bautista Ezcurra is an alternative while Boffelli has also been eyed as a potential candidate for the midfield.

Others outside of the current Jaguares setup include Argentina XV selections Juan Cappiello and Santiago Álvarez, though the latter has since returned to the Pumas 7s roster for the HSBC Sevens Series.
