AJ MacGinty kicked 14 points as Sale Sharks shut out Cardiff Blues 24-0 at AJ Bell Stadium on Saturday. The USA flyhalf was in fine form with the boot, landing four penalty goals and one conversion despite the adverse weather conditions. His final conversion attempt drifted just wide of the uprights from a tough angle spoiling an otherwise perfect performance from the tee.
MacGinty also controlled territory with his tactical kicking and was perfect defensively, making all eight tackles asked of him. His overall contributions earned him man-of-the-match honors and more importantly put Sale back in striking distance of the Blues, who are now just two points ahead in Pool 2.
After a somewhat rocky start to the campaign MacGinty lost his place in the team to Australian international James O’Connor, but renewed confidence looks to have restored the Eagles star to first choice No 10 for the Sharks with O’Connor shifting to fullback. Sale are currently in 9th spot on the Premiership table but have now won three in a row across all competitions.
