SaberCats to play against Uruguay in January

The Houston SaberCats have finalised their pre-season fixture list and it includes a match against Uruguay on January 20. Los Teros will travel to Texas to play a warm-up against the new Major League Rugby franchise one week before their two-match Americas 2 World Cup Qualifying series against Canada.

It’s a wise move for Uruguay, with the SaberCats likely to field several internationals such as Kyle Sumsion, Zach Pangelinan, and Fijian ace Osea Kolinisau. Canada do not yet have a fixture lined up for the January 27 match at BC Place in Vancouver.

Also added to the impressive SaberCats pre-season schedule is a friendly against New York Athletic Club, a former home of prop signing Jake Turnbull. USA internationals Nate Brakeley and Al McFarland are regulars for NYAC while former Sacramento Express flyhalf Harry Bennett is also in their roster.

The SaberCats held their first full-contact scrimmage against the Austin Blacks this past weekend and on Saturday will play Dallas RFC in a training match at the University of Houston. This week’s scrimmage will be open to the public, with kickoff set for 3pm local time.
