Guatemala Prepares for 2017 International Competition

Guatemala is preparing for this year’s international competition. The Central American republic will compete in Costa Rica from August 27 to September 03.

While Guatemala faced Ecuador in South American B Championship repechage in 2016 there will be no such fixture this year. Instead Ecuador has decided against competing and will thereby not play in the upcoming South American B Championship.

Guatemala enter the South American C Championship as favorites. Los Jaguares won the title in December 2016, defeating Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama. It gave Guatemala back-to-back titles. also in 2016 Guatemala came very close to defeating Ecuador in repechage. Having narrowly missed out the team went on to have a successful campaign in Central America.

Jaguares Head Coach Ricardo León has named a roster to prepare for the South American C Championship. Included are players from six clubs. San José Mario leads with 20 players while Quetzales has 16.

This year’s edition will be played starting on August 27 in Costa Rica. The competition will run until September 04 with all matches being played in Costa Rica. Changes from previous years see the inclusion of Nicaragua. History will be made with the country competing for the first time. Missing this year will be El Salvador.
