Venues set for World Cup Qualifiers

Hamilton’s Tim Hortons Field has been confirmed as the venue for the Canadian leg of the Americas 1 World Cup Qualifying series against the USA on June 24. The home of the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats opened in September 2014 on the same site as the historic Ivor Wynne Stadium, demolished in 2012. With a cost of more than $140m the stadium features a regular capacity of 24,000, modern amenities such as multiple high definition video screens, and a synthetic turf surface.

This will be the first time rugby has been played at the stadium, located approximately 65km south-west of Canada’s regular Ontario home of BMO Field in Toronto. Hamilton has previously hosted two Canadian internationals at Mohawk Sports Park, with matches against the USA in 1996 and Uruguay in 2001.

The USA will host the second leg of the Qualifiers a week later on July 1 at San Diego’s Torero Stadium. Located on the University of San Diego campus, the field has a more modest capacity of 6,000 and features a grass field. It was notably used as the home pitch for the San Diego Breakers during the 2016 PRO Rugby season.

Tickets are now available for each game via Rugby Canada and USA Rugby.
