Four new Board Members for Rugby Canada

Four new members have been appointed to Rugby Canada’s Board of Directors at the governing body’s Annual General Meeting in Toronto over the weekend. Incumbent Directors Troy Myers (NS) and Gord Sneddon (ON) have completed their terms as specified in the Rugby Canada By-Laws, so too player representatives Dawn Dauphinee (NS) and Dr. Mark Lawson (BC). Directors are appointed for terms of four years and are eligible to serve two terms, while player representatives are limited to two terms of two years each.

Taking over the vacant Vice-Chair role left by Sneddon’s departure is Kathy Henderson, who has been reappointed to her second term having previously served on the Executive Committee as Secretary. Henderson was Senior Vice-President, Marketing and Revenue, for the 2015 Pan-Am Games Committee and in February 2016 was named Chief Executive Officer of Curling Canada.

Vulcan, Alberta, Town Councillor and former Alberta Rugby Union President John Seaman joins Henderson for a second term as Provincial Director. Brian Burke, President of Hockey Operations for the NHL’s Calgary Flames, has also been reappointed for a second term as General Director.

New to the Board as a General Director is corporate and estate lawyer Sally Dennis from Vancouver while there are three former international players named for the first time, coincidentally all second row forwards. Joining as a Provincial Director is Dr. Araba ‘Roo’ Chintoh, who won caps between 2000 and 2009 and was part of the 2002 Women’s World Cup side.

The multi-talented Maria Samson has been nominated as the new women’s Players Director, An engineer in the energy industry by trade, Samson was a third-place finisher on the most reason season of ‘Canada’s Smartest Person’. She also took home Canadian Women’s Player of the Year honors in 2012 and was a finalist in the 2014 Women’s World Cup.

Lastly Tyler Hotson, who remains a semi-professional player with Richmond in the English second division, will represent the men as Players Director. Hotson won 45 caps between 2008 and 2015 and was part of the 2011 World Cup side. He is currently a financial analyst for Goldman Sachs in London, England.
