Video: Axel Müller stars as Toulon hammer Bayonne

Axel Müller starred as Toulon hammered Bayonne on Saturday. Playing at home Toulon sent a warning sign to opposition sides both in the Top 14 and Champions Cup. The 82-14 win was easily the biggest of the Top 14 season.

The 2016 Olympian played right wing, scoring two tries. Müller was also impressive in general play. His offload to Liam Gill gave Toulon the game’s opening try while his break set up Brian Habana for Toulon’s third. Additional contributions saw him passing to Juan Smith for his first try and a Müller break led to Gill scoring for the second time.

Aside from Müller there were three other scorers from the Americas. Former Pumas skipper Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe crossed for a second half try for Toulon. Chilean Pablo Huete crossed for one of Bayonne’s two tries, both of which were converted by Martín Bustos Moyano.

The match was also a significant occasion for the club. Playing at home the Stade Mayol was at capacity. A crowd of 16,000 spectators were on hand to see their team win big. The venue is undergoing an upgrade. Upon completion it will seat 18,200.

Toulon entered the fixture as an upper-mid table side. Following the win the club moves into 5th position. Bayonne are not so fortunate. The club remains stranded in bottom position and all but certain to be relegated. The club is a staggering 18 competition points adrift of 12th spot, the position required to avoid relegation.
