Brazil Claim Bronze in Junior South American Championship

Brazil got past Paraguay today to finish third in the Junior South American Championship. The 29-13 win sees the Tupis coming away with one win and two losses while Paraguay finish winless.

The result means Brazil is safe and will again play in the tournament in 2017. Paraguay is not so lucky. Los Yákares will now need to defeat Colombia’s under 19 side in repechage to avoid relegation.

For Paraguay the performance today was easily their best of the tournament. Having been well beaten by both Uruguay and Chile the Paraguayans gave Brazil a tough contest.

Scoring opened in the 13th minute with prop Levy Silva going over. A lengthily period of competitive rugby followed before Brazil scored again. The 30th minute try came from a Paraguayan error. Winger Daniel Lima’s try was converted by Felipe Cunha to make it a 12-0 scoreline.

Paraguay responded with Nicolas Heisecke opening their account. His penalty would be the only remaining score of the first half.

Brazil went two converted tries ahead after the break. David Páscoa’s try was unconverted but the Portuguese speaking country was nonetheless up 17-3. Matheus Cláudio scored Brazil’s fourth in the 61st minute and a fifth followed in the 65th minute, Thiago Evarista being the scorer.

Evaristo went from hero to zero when, minutes later, he was yellow carded. The result was Paraguay enjoying the better of play as a converted try and a penalty followed. With it Paraguay finished with respectability added to the scoring.
