Chile Outplay Brazil in Junior South American Championship Opener

With a 16-0 victory over Brazil Chile’s u19’s side began the Junior South American Championship in style on Sunday. Joining Chile and Brazil are Paraguay and Uruguay. The four countries are competing for one spot in the 2017 World Rugby Junior World Trophy.

Played under strong winds in Santiago it was a game in which the Chileans demonstrated their superiority. With superior offense and defense the home side was able to control play to come out deserving winners.

Chile was able to camp itself in the Brazilian half for the vast majority of the match. The opening score game from fullback Benjamin Baraona. His 3rd minute penalty would give Chile the lead which they would hold throughout.

Brazilian Leonardo Ceccarelli had opportunities to land penalties in the 25th and 31st minutes but was off target. Chile’s kicking was more accurate which saw Baraona making it a 9-0 match. His penalties in the 40th and 54th minutes were followed by Brazil loosing Michel Oliveira and Matheus Rodrigues to yellow cards.

With a two-man advantage the Chileans landed the killer blow. Santiago Videla crossed for the game’s only try. Videla then converted his own try as Chile completed a 16-0 victory.

Both teams will return to the field on Wednesday. Chile will face Paraguay while Brazil will take-on Uruguay. Los Teritos put on a strong opening performance, downing Paraguay 90-0.
