Uruguayan Club Classic Goes International

An Uruguayan club classic goes International as Montevideo clubs Old Christians and Old Boys are to meet in the Quarter Finals of Argentina’s Torneo del Interior, the third tier level of Argentine club rugby.

Old Christians finished undefeated and in first place in pool play, outplaying all opponents. Following away wins over Logaritmo (Rosario) and Universitario (Santa Fé) and a home victory over CURNE (Chaco), the Montevideo club hammered San Patricio (Corrientes) 64-0.

The club required one point to secure qualification and a victory to finish in top spot, while the Corrientes club needed a bonus point victory and for the Uruguayan side to score no points.

Both Uruguayan clubs made use of the help given to them by the URU. The national governing body freed up Los Teros players to feature in the Torneo del Interior B this past weekend rather than play in the South American A Championship fixture against Brazil in São Paulo. Three regulars for Los Teros thereby played for Old Christians Clubs against San Patricio – Manuel Blengio, Leandro Leivas and Matías Beer.

The first place finish assures Old Christians Club of a home Quarter Final. Their opponents are to be Montevideo rivals Old Boys who finished in second position in their group behind San Ignacio.

Old Boys’ run to the Quarter Finals saw a comprehensive 72-5 hammering of Bigornia (Chubut). Despite the magnitude of the result it was insufficient to finish above San Ignacio (Mar del Plata) who had defeated Old Boys in the opening round.

The Quarter Finals are to take place this coming Saturday, April 30. The matches are to be as follows:

Fixture Home Away
Quarter Final 1 Huirapuca (Tucumán) CRUNA (Chaco)
Quarter Final 2 Old Christians (Uruguay) Old Boys (Uruguay)
Quarter Final 3 San Ignacio (Mar del Plata) Los Tordos (Mendoza)
Quarter Final 4 Jockey Club (Córdoba) Liceo (Mendoza)
