Brazil and Chile Qualify for Hong Kong Sevens

Two spots were taken for the world’s premier annual Rugby Sevens event today as Brazil and Chile sealed qualification for the Hong Kong Sevens. The two South American countries earned the right to compete in Hong Kong this year by finishing as the top two in the Sevens tournament in Viña del Mar, Chile.

The home side, Los Condores had an impressive day, starting with a 31-0 win over Peru. Tries scored by Felipe Brangier, Pedro Pablo Verschae, Francisco Urroz, and Claudio Velásquez set Chile up for the tough second outing against the Tupis.

Against Brazil Los Condores’ defense against stood tall as no points were conceded in the 24-0 win. Crossing for further tries were Brangier, Urroz and Velásquez while Anton Petrowitsch also scored.

Chile’s third outing against Uruguay was the toughest of the day. With their eyes on Hong Kong Los Condores succeeded in getting the work done, pulling off a 26-10 win. Velásquez scored for the third time in as many games and was supported by teammates Julio Blanc, Juan Pablo Larenas and Christian Huerta who each scored a try.

The Brazilians second placed finish was all but sealed after the first match. The Tupis overcame Uruguay 19-12 to put one foot in the Hong Kong door. Although Chile had the better of Brazil in the second match the Portuguese speaking country recovered well to see off Peru 56-7.

The 2016 Hong Kong Sevens tournament will take place from April 8-10. Chile and Brazil are to join twenty-six other competing countries with Americas countries Argentina, Canada and the USA all involved as core teams. In 2015 Uruguay competed in place of Uruguay.
