Guatemala Make History to win South American C Championship

Guatemala Made history on Saturday evening, winning the South American C Championship in San Salvador. Defeating El Salvador 26-8 Los Jaguares completed a three wins from three matches to return home with a first ever international tournament trophy.

The title deciding fixture was against the 2014 tournament winners and in their national capital. The 2014 competition was tightly-fought with Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala all winning two and losing one match. This year, though, Guatemala started strongly by completing a first ever win over Costa Rica and powering past Panama in the second round.

The treble came against south-western neighbors with a well-earned victory. The Guatemalans were the better team throughout, holding a 16-3 half time advantage and displaying organization while El Salvador had two players yellow carded in the match.

Two second half tries ensured Los Jaguares would retain control as El Salvador’s only try was to be the only second half points scored by Los Torogoces. Having defeated El Salvador in a warm-up fixture and also being too strong for Honduras Los Jaguares can be termed the top Central American team.

As a result of winning the South American C Championship Los Jaguares have earned the right to face Ecuador in repechage. The winner of the fixture will seal the fourth spot in the 2016 South American B Championship while the loser will play in the South American C Championship in 2016.
